Übernachtung | Luxurious mountain cabin with magnificent views

Perched high above Gudbrandsdalen in Gålå, one of Norway’s most established mountain destinations, this traditional Norwegian mountain lodge offers sweeping views across some of the country’s most celebrated landscapes, including Rondane and Jotunheimen.

Set at approximately 1,000 metres above sea level within a private gated mountain enclave, the cabin occupies a generous plot surrounded by traditional turf-roofed mountain cabins, open skies and vast mountain scenery. Despite its peaceful setting, the local shop is only a five-minute drive away and can also be reached on foot via a pleasant walk through the area.

Gålå is a true year-round destination, with each season offering a different way to experience the mountains. Winter brings skiing and snow-covered landscapes; late spring and summer open up for hiking, cycling, swimming, trout and fly fishing; August brings the renowned Peer Gynt festival by Gålåvatnet; and autumn is a particularly beautiful time for berry picking, mushroom foraging, hunting and long walks through the changing landscape.

For generations, visitors have travelled to Gålå for its mountain landscapes, fresh air, reliable snow conditions and unique location between two of Norway’s most remarkable national park regions. Positioned in the heart of Gudbrandsdalen, between Rondane — Norway’s first national park — and Jotunheimen, home to the highest mountains in Northern Europe, the area is known for its outdoor life, food traditions, mountain farming culture and year-round access to nature.

The cabin spans approximately 200 square metres and has been built in the traditional style of the region, with solid timber construction, a grass roof and a warm, welcoming atmosphere throughout.

Inside, guests will find four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a sauna, a separate TV room with Apple TV, underfloor heating, high ceilings, fibre broadband, dimmable lighting throughout and two large open fireplaces. The cabin comfortably accommodates up to nine guests, with flexible sleeping arrangements and generous living spaces designed for gathering with family and friends. There is ample private parking for several cars.

The interior has been carefully curated with a blend of comfortable contemporary pieces, local craftsmanship and selected Norwegian antiques. The focus is on creating a practical and welcoming mountain home where guests can relax after a day outdoors, gather around the fire, enjoy long meals together and settle into a slower rhythm shaped by the seasons. Comfortable seating areas throughout the cabin make it equally suited to larger family gatherings and quieter evenings with a book, a glass of local brew or simply the changing mountain views.

The kitchen is fully equipped with induction cooking, a gas range, double ovens, a large walk-in refrigerator and freezer, and everything needed for both everyday meals and festive gatherings. The open fireplace in the kitchen can also be used for grilling and cooking over the fire — particularly atmospheric when the weather is too cold to cook outdoors.

Guests can also enjoy access to some of the finest local produce in Gudbrandsdalen, a valley long known for its farming traditions and food culture. Local cheeses, baked goods, wild fish, game and seasonal produce are all available nearby, offering a genuine taste of the region.

A large picture window in the main living room frames the surrounding mountains and changing light throughout the day, while the extensive grounds and terrace offer uninterrupted views across Gudbrandsdalen towards Rondane and the distant peaks of Jotunheimen. The setting is particularly beautiful at sunset, when the evening light settles across the valley and the mountains beyond.

In winter, guests enjoy true ski-in, ski-out access to the cross-country trails directly from the cabin, while the alpine slopes are approximately a five-minute walk away. The area is known for its extensive network of groomed trails, reliable snow conditions and long mountain winters. Ice fishing on nearby mountain lakes, sledding, snowshoeing and long days in the snow are all part of life here.

Late spring and summer bring a different rhythm. Gålåvatnet, which can be seen from the cabin and grounds, lies just below the mountain plateau and offers excellent opportunities for trout fishing, paddling and swimming, while nearby mountain lakes offer excellent fly fishing. Countless trails lead into the surrounding fells, while the open landscape invites exploration in every direction. Hiking, cycling and long days outdoors are all part of life here. During the summer months, sheep and cattle graze freely across the mountains, continuing traditions that have shaped this landscape for centuries.

Autumn is perhaps the region’s best-kept secret. Crisp mountain air, golden colours and quieter trails create ideal conditions for walking, berry picking, mushroom foraging and hunting. Evenings are spent around the fire, in the sauna or gathered around the dining table enjoying local food and good company.
